The documentary film “Dorival Caymmi – The Sounds of Life” takes us on a passionate journey into the universe of the composer and singer who revolutionized songwriting in Brazil, leading the way to the Bossa Nova and Tropicália movements and contributing to make Brazilian music popular worldwide. The narrative is based on a previously unreleased interview in which Caymmi captivates us with amusing stories and improvised performances. Everyday life and philosophical matters like “what is the shape of the wind?” were topics for his songs. Sensorially translating the artist’s verses, the film travels to the vibrant atmosphere of Bahia beaches and fishermen, brings forth references to African roots, candomblé spirituality and religion, and follows Caymmi’s love stories. Demystifying the protagonist through moments of simplicity and intimacy, the film unveils his soul, creative process, passions and sorrows, and shares the universality of what it means to be a poet; a poet of sounds, a poet of life.
